The ownership of FTC got together the other night for a future projects meeting. By ownership, I mean the entire Senate, The Ruling Council, as well as the Almighty Overlords who run things behind the scenes, Rick and myself.

Assassin knife for sale in the FTC store

Very soon there will be some custom knives designed with the hunter/camper in mind. There will also be a line of low cost utility blades for contractors and techs who are looking for something better than changeable bladed razor knives.

We are currently designing a new survival knife that is going to be really awesome, a true outdoor bladed tool that will be able to tackle anything thrown in its path!

We have more Assassins on the way also, as well as one or two freehand customs. FTC has also purchased some new tooling that will add to fit and finish for all FTC products.

We have received a lot of emails from people who are interested in Ninja weapons, so after some long drawn out talks we think we have arrived at a few Ninja surprises we can also offer moving forward to the new year.

2011 Is looking to be a great year for FTC with just these aforementioned new items being produced for our product line. I guess all that’s left is to get to the forge and make all this happen…

More to come soon. Don’t miss any of our announcements on new knives added to the store, and specials offered only to our fans on Facebook and Twitter!
My conversations about today's knife industry usually lead to a discussion of the variety of price and function available to today's consumers. This inevitably leads the discussion into the differences between factory manufactured knives, vs. custom hand made knives. Are you willing to sacrifice function for a lower price? In this post, Full Tang Cutlery explains why that's exactly what you may wind up doing if you purchase the run of the mill factory knives.

It’s way too cold out to ride my bike and Rick is away for the holiday, so I guess that leaves me to add more ranting to the FTC blog. Last night I was speaking to a friend about all things cutlery related, and it seemed that the conversation came down to one of a few things; price for one, and function being the other.

Being in both this line of work, and also turning wrenches in my full time job I understand what my friend was talking about and to me its all about factory produced knives vs. custom made knives. Now, I realize that not all factory knives are created equal. Some are very high quality, and others are very cheaply made and still others are nothing more than decorations.

The well made ones , while being very nice in both fit and finish as well as function, fall short in one very important category that in my view is crucial. They are all the same. A factory can never give each piece character, or that personal touch a blacksmith can who creates every step of the piece by hand.

Assassin knife for sale in the FTC store

Thus far, Rick and I have yet to make a blade that was not meant for a specific task. We have made fighters (bladed weapons), utility (cutting tools), outdoors (hunting knives and tools), as well as custom orders (full sized swords) and several more (kitchen cutlery), not to mention all that are on the drawing board (unique knife designs).

Of course, one can find a suitable knife for most tasks at the local big box store for very cheap. I have visited several of these stores and looked at what they offer. Again, they where of various prices and makes… some so cheaply made that in my view, if used for any serious cutting tasks they would fail. By that I mean non-folders breaking due to cheap metal , crappy way-too-thin rat tail tangs, and very thin tips not meant to hold up while piercing anything with some mass. (I won’t even get into folding knives with locks that fail so easily its a joke.)

It’s a good thing that there are no safety regulations that govern how sturdy a knife has to be to be safe. Good for those makers of cheap knives that is. If there where, they would be out of business already.

Anyway, they all share another thing without exception. They are all made in China.

That sucks.

One thing I stand on in this line of work is that we sell all American made products. I for one enjoy having things that are handmade and unique that not everyone who shops at Walmart can have for the “made in China” price of next to nothing.

This to me sums up the argument of factory manufactured knives vs. custom, hand made knives.

Wow, it’s been a while since I posted on the blog. Anyone who knows me knows this is not my strong suit, being more of an analog man stuck in a digital world! So anyway… here goes nuthin’.

After doing several shows over the summer season, I have learned a few things. One of the biggest is that you can’t please everyone! Which is why FTC has been striving to bring several styles of handmade knives to market – to appeal to a wider range of people.

Our Kwaiken line of knives is one of my favorites. For a simple time tested design such as it is, it sure still holds a universal appeal to people of all sorts. It is nice, however, to see that the Kwaiken knives with custom full profile jimping hold the highest appeal.

I say this for a few reasons, one being that a lot more work goes into these pieces, than the more plain ones… It also says that many people still prefer a “handmade custom” to a “factory cookie cutter” kinda knife. We know this by the reaction to our displays at various shows.

With times being what they are, Full Tang Cutlery is committed to providing the most in handmade knives for the money. It took some time, but we now have several examples of our inventory of hand made, custom knives in our store.

You know, it’s funny the questions people ask at shows. One of my favorites is when somebody picks up a sword, or large bowie knife and asks… “is this legal to carry”?

I’m left speechless.

My advice to anyone is to use common sense. Normally, the largest knife I carry has a blade of 3.5-4.5 inches. One that does not stick out, or draw too much attention. After all, if you’re going shopping, would you really need that 10 inch bowie?

I think not.

I myself am an avid collector, and daily user of knives. I carry the right tool for the job. Day to day, I would think a 3.5-4 inch blade is plenty.

Hey wait… why are all those swords in my private collection?

As i said , use common sense.

Full Tang Cutlery proudly presents our newest creation, the Gothic Battle Sword. This monster is made from quarter inch thick 1075 high carbon steel and sharpened to a razor edge. A semi-fantasy version of the ninjato, the full tang construction lends overall strength to the blade and moves the center of gravity a bit farther back when compared to traditional ninjatos. The blade is differentially heat treated to make the spine soft for flexibility and leave the edge hard to hold an edge. The handle is black leather covered and wrapped in authentic samurai katana style with flat nylon paracord which will not rot. The guard is made of quarter inch thick steel and fashioned after two axe heads ground to a false edge. The spiked pommel is ground to match the guard to make it functional for pommel strikes. The look is rounded out with little custom jimping on the spine of the blade and between the guard and the start of the edge. Truly, this is one hell of a weapon! View the full size pictures in the gallery, or take a peek at the slideshow below (expand to full screen for best view). This spear point Gothic Fang was requested in a blackened blade, with minimal jimping. The second in a series of custom ordered blackened knives, the Oak handle is stained to a vibrant, almost red shade that compliments the natural grain of the wood. The contrast of the handle to the blade is breathtaking.

The double edged, full tang blade is made of 1/8th” thick D2 high carbon steel. Brass pins complete the look of this sharpened, impressive piece.

Enjoy your FTC custom order Gothic Fang, Eric!

This Gothic Fang knife is currently available, featuring an Oak stained handle, full spine jimping, a D2 full tang spear point blade, a double choil mark, and a jimped crown pommel.

In its fully jimped form a Gothic Fang is truly a remarkable piece sure to be the centerpiece of any collection of knives. 1/8″ thick D2 steel is used, with 9 ½” overall length and a 4 ¼” blade that will take and hold a razor sharp edge. The Gothic Fang’s unique handle shape provides a sure grip in any position. This assures that you will not loose your knife or slip forward or back on the handle during hard usage. The heavily contoured handle is sure to feel right in any size hand, as proven by both male and female customers. As seen here, variances in customer desires can produce slight differences in the design, thus making every knife a “one off” unique collector’s piece.
